"Let my prayer be counted as incense before You, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice."

Psalm 141:2

Evening (Vespers)

Giving Thanks at the Close of Day

As the day draws to a close, the Church invites us to pause, reflect on God's faithfulness, and offer Him our gratitude. Evening Prayer is a time to thank the Lord for His many blessings, seek His mercy for our shortcomings, and entrust ourselves to His loving care.

Whether the day has been filled with joy or marked by challenges, we can confidently place it in God's hands, knowing that He has been with us every step of the way.

"Let my prayer be counted as incense before You, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice."
— Psalm 141:2

When is it Prayed?

Evening Prayer is traditionally prayed in the late afternoon or early evening, often before or around sunset. It provides an opportunity to reflect on the day, thank God for His blessings, and prepare our hearts for a peaceful night.

The Church's official Evening Prayer (Vespers) is part of the Liturgy of the Hours and is prayed daily throughout the world by clergy, religious, and many lay faithful.

Evening Prayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Heavenly Father,

As this day comes to an end, I thank You for Your love, Your mercy, and Your constant presence in my life. Thank You for every blessing received, every lesson learned, and every opportunity to love and serve You.

Forgive me for the times I have fallen short today. Heal what is wounded within me, strengthen what is weak, and help me to trust more fully in Your providence.

Grant me a peaceful evening and fill my heart with hope as I rest in Your care. May Your grace continue to guide me, and may I always seek to follow Your holy will.

I ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Reflection

Evening Prayer reminds us that every day is a gift from God. Before the day ends, we are invited to pause, give thanks, ask for forgiveness where needed, and rest in the confidence that God's mercy is new each morning.

As you reflect on the events of the day, remember that nothing is wasted when it is entrusted to Christ. Offer Him your joys, your struggles, and your hopes for tomorrow.
